Lousy incompatabilities
For the last couple of days, I've been playing with the HP SureStore DAT8e (e=external) drive that I was given so that I might actually be able to do backups of my all important data. Alas, I just found out that the drive is, in actuality, a SureStore DAT8eU (U=Unix).
So, no joy in Tapeville for me today since the machine that I really need it on at the moment is a Windows box. I guess I'll hang on to it for a while and play with it under Linux, but that means a whole new set of frustrations, as well as (probably) having to acquire another SCSI card and cable.

Addendum - I booted the system with a Knoppix 3.3 CD and the drive works flawlessly. Thus was I able to start toying with it. I successfully backed up a small portion of my primary drive (which is my Windows partition) by pointing Kdat at /dev/hda0/foo and turning it loose although I've not yet tried to restore from it. That's next and I should be able to play with it this weekend.
Since, Knoppix is based on the Debian distribution of Linux - and since I've been trying (albeit unsuccessfully - I guess I'll just bite the bullet and jigdo the blasted things) to somehow obtain a decent set of CDs for it anyway - my hope is that I can replace my existing Redhat installation on the secodnary and tertiary drives of that box with Debian and be able to institute a backup solution on a regular basis. (Hey - one can dream, can't one???)
So - while there may very well be no joy, there is mild amusement and a minor, warm, fuzzy feeling.
